History

At the Conference of the Student Volunteer Missionary Union held in Liverpool, January, 1896, the Students there assembled, including delegates from Britain, America, Germany, France, Norway and Holland, resolved that part of the sum of money they had subscribed should be handed over to the World's Student Christian Federation for the purpose of extending the objects of the Volunteer Union in the Australian Universities and Colleges. The World's Student christian Federation instructed their general secretary, Mr. John R. Mott, M.A. to extend the tour he was then making of the Universities of Europe and Asia to include the Colleges of Australasia. As a result of his visit the Canterbury College Christian Union was formed April 28th, 1896. Mr. Mott visited Australasia again in 1903, and a missionary conference was held at Canterbury College.

Objects

The objects of the Union as stated in the constitution are:—“To strengthen the bonds of union among Christian Students ; to influence fellow-students to become followers of Christ ; to deepen the spiritual life of Students ; to promote Christian work especially by and for Students ; to lead Students as they go forth from the University to place their lives where they will be most useful in extending the kingdom of Christ”
